Follow me on my adventure to build the perfect machine. This video might be a bit long but I had a lot of things to show and I tried to significantly upgrade the video production quality compared to my previous PC build videos as you’ll see.
I got the brilliant idea to make Torrens during the 2018 DDR chaos when the price of everything that had DDR in it went +999% because of freaking crypto-mining. As a result I spent several months monitoring all hardware websites in Europe hoping to find “ok” deals. It made it even more complicated that I was, as usual, looking for very specific components.
Because of the nature of my IKEA BESTÅ cabinet integration, I had to work with various constrains such as available space, noise, vibration, airflow, dust, temperatures and of course RGB coolness. The final result is exactly as I imagined it: neat, silent and runs fast, mission accomplished!
I went the extra mile to program an Arduino to manage RGB lighting of the graphics card and to provide integration with my home automation system but I’m still working on it. I also upgraded my screen back-light system with an other Arduino controlled by Prismatik-psieg (which implies that only video source from the computer can be used). It’s not super hard to do but I did make some modifications to adapt it to my configuration. The next step is to find a way to make it work with the PS4 (4k, HDR), I’m thinking with a camera maybe.

TORRENS SYST, a eu raison de Nostro D:
That cat is a cat of culture.
Great beast! Looks like it requires a lot of efforts but totally worth it!
Salut Nostro !
I like everything about you, I will pay attention to you silently.
As always awesome. Keep up the good work. =)
Nice Work! I see your AMVs and other videos since 2012, i remember Sulaco V2 your previous PC. Greetings from a mexican fan
Nice video! Your sunglasses looks so cool; is it a specific brand/model?
Thx, some cheap chinese brand that I can’t read. I bought in 2009. Polarized Glare-Guard TAC Alloy Frame Sunglasses with UV380 You can find some pictures of them but don’t know where to buy.
I see, thanks to you I found something a bit similar; item 202800965326 on ebay. What do you think about it? Thank you!
Very similar indeed, I might get one as backup.
I realize we now have the benefit of hindsight, but I just want to quality ask why it was the 8700k that you thought at the time to be your best option vs the likes of the 2700X? Outside of the core and thread difference, there’s also that (with the benefit of hindsight), if you ever wanted more CPU grunt without replacing the motherboard, you’d be limited to only a 9900ks while on AM4 it would go all the way up to at least a 3950X and likely a “4950X” as well.
Ryzen was still a new plateform when I designed this machine and didn’t feel like doing too much troubleshooting. I had heavy constrains regarding temperature and Intel was known for running cooler. The 8700k seemed like the best option for me with just the right amount of overkill. From my experience with my previous systems I know that when it will be time to upgrade, I will be looking to start from scratch with all the best new stuff. Torrens is already 2 years old and I’m planning on keeping it for at least 3 more. I’m sure it can hold up for longer but I spend a lot of time with computers so I might as well have nice things.
2nd gen Ryzen released in April 2018 – did you by chance build earlier than that? Also the comment about Intel running cooler is again funny in hindsight because it was pretty much Intel’s move to 6 cores with the 8000 series that Intel started to have some temperature issues, and this became all the more obvious with their later 8-core refresh in the form of the 9000 series. (also just to clarify, Ryzen in both mainstream and Threadripper forms even from gen1 eliminated all temperature issues that previously existed in AMD’s FX series as the architecture is completely different, but obviously you said you didn’t want to do 1st gen stuff for stability reasons).
I designed it in november 2017 and started building in January 2018. We’ll see how the competition looks like in the future but Ryzen 5 is definitely a valid option for me.
